Merging Polyco and HPC Healthline has prompted us to do things a bit differently.
So, we invite you to flip through this digital booklet for your first sneak peek at what's happening during this transition period.
The new face of the companies you know
We are unashamed to become Polyco Healthline – the merger was the right decision on so many fronts, not least the easy alignment of our ethos and many customer benefits.
Because of this feeling, we thought we would start fresh. So we've created a new 'group' identity which will house the current brands of Polyco and HPC Healthline.
Drawing from the Board
The problem was simple: how do we visually communicate the merger of two companies leading the way in the market?
Both design teams from Polyco and HPC started with a brief from the Directors, detailing the need to keep the design simple, recognisable, useful for both print and digital media. After many iterations, we came up with a shortlist from which this logo was chosen:

We also made these product icons to help you identify our various product groups.
Now, but not yet
So expect to see this logo more and more when both Polyco and HPC Healthline are presented as a merged company (like right now).
Of course any design changes take time and then they will slowly filter through supply lines, so there will still be a need for Polyco and HPC to retain their identities in the immediate future.
But we plan eventually to integrate into one seamlessly branded company – under the same roof, logo, catalogue – but don't expect that to happen for a while.

Welcome to DC5
"The site is so large now that we're tempted to get a golf cart to move around." Steve McCarthy says.
With all the Lincolnshire mud, Polyco Healthline's Warehouse Manager would need a more rugged vehicle today. We make our way to DC5 – the soon to be new home for Polyco stock. In fact, this building marks the first concrete integration between Polyco and HPC, consolidating the companies’ logistics to one site and uniting the product range, ready for despatch.
The endless structure obscures views of the winter countryside as we step across a blue carpet of muddy pallets (soon to be replaced by a tunnel), leading to a side entrance.
To save power, only half the lights are on, illuminating the 3,000m2 concrete floor which is so flat and polished it looks like a gigantic grey ice rink. And the only sounds are a distant, echoey hammering and electricians shouting to each other as they test the power.

The floor will soon lose this sheen when carefully monitored 24-hour picking trips are made by the five shiny forklifts and electric pallet trucks. Working from the same digital system, using barcode scanners and automated stock checks, these vehicles will help ensure that Polyco Healthline continues to maintain its 98.4% service accuracy record.
One forklift is already in use, archiving around 30 pallets fresh off the truck from Enfield, like a mechanised librarian shelving new books. Its driver, Kyle, is among the dozens of staff who have worked on the site for years – knowing the system inside out. And he enjoys the work: “I first came from an agency five years ago, but was then given a permanent job. Everyone is really friendly, each day is different and there’s a great vibe because we can listen to music all day.”
You can't see the end of the blue and steel racking system, with space available for 9,500 pallets. That will bring the site's pallet capacity to over 30,000. According to Steve, the system will be highly efficient, with the bestselling products nearest the four loading bays to reduce the distance the pickers must travel.

Not just a warehouse
To the left of the doors is an internal office which will house the Logistics team. One room is lined with computers, another with only a thermostat on the wall. Mirrored on the other side is another building with a mezzanine floor above. A welder is completing the safety rail, sparks bouncing on the floor below.
"We're also moving the manufacturing facility from Enfield. And on the mezzanine above we'll have the small items shelves that don't need pallets."
Steve is talking about the bespoke extrusion for gloves Polyco makes for McDonald's. Outside, three JCBs are moving tons of soil to clear the way for a ring road that will connect the fifth warehouse with the others. Then products can easily travel to allow for mixed pallets of products from Polyco and HPC.
Attached to the front of DC5, and different to all the other DCs, is the shell of a two storey office space. Here, various HPC and Polyco departments will join under one roof, including Purchasing, Finance and Customer Services.
After six months' planning and building, then the site will be finished, and perhaps Steve's reward will be a golf cart.
Building DC5 is the latest chapter in the ten-year growth of the Bourne site.
Operating 24 hours, the day shift workers prepare orders for next-day delivery to mainland UK and to 38 different countries with a three to five day lead time. Then the night shift takes over, receiving container loads of products directly from the Port of Felixstowe. Over the years, the system and technology has evolved beyond recognition and the new warehouse takes advantage of that legacy.
The DC5 staff will receive the same training, use same barcode scanners, computer system and vehicles as the other warehouses. This means personnel can work interchangeably across the whole site, depending on the demand for various products. It sounds simple – and it is. But business continuity is the best ingredient for effective logistics.

Although our warehouses are grey on the outside, it wouldn’t be inappropriate if they were green. Especially when operating 24 hours a day, we wanted to use our architectural footprint to reduce our carbon one as much as possible. That’s why the site is home to the largest solar array in Lincolnshire, feeding power back into the National Grid and DC5 will also generate its own solar-heated water.
Our drivers are trained in fuel efficiency and economical delivery routing and no pallet is ever wasted with our 100% recovery and repair scheme. All this means we have achieved our ISO 14001 and 50001 standard for energy monitoring and use.
The near future
Polyco product deliveries will start being despatched from DC5 by 3 January 2017. Soon after, the manufacturing facility, small items, connecting road and offices will be completed. The plan is for the site to be fully operational by April.
There are also plans for an integrated computer system which will allow easy track and trace for customers and online proofs of delivery.
